An indie Korean band has grabbed the attention of Korean listeners after beating the K-Pop powerhouse aespa to become this year’s most-nominated act at the Korean Music Awards.

The Korean Music Awards selection committee revealed on Friday, February 6, KST, that the indie band by the name of Danpyunsun & The Moments Ensemble had bagged six nominations with their first album, Hail to the Music. Producer and singer-songwriter Danpyunsun (real name Park Jong Yoon) formed the band after the disbandment of the quartet Danpyunsun and the Sailors.

The album has been nominated for Album of the Year and Best Modern Rock Album. Three of its individual tracks have also been nominated in different categories: “Independent” for Song of the Year and “Days Happier Than Today Will Be Few in My Remaining Life” for Best Modern Rock Song. The band is also nominated in the Musician of the Year category.
With these six nominations, Danpyunsun & The Moments Ensemble have surpassed aespa by a thin margin since the girl group has bagged five nominations this year. aespa is up for Musician of the Year, while their full-length album Armageddon is nominated for the Album of the Year and Best K-Pop Album awards. Its track “Supernova” is competing for Song of the Year as well, along with Best Pop Song. With so many categories in common, Danpyunsun & The Moments Ensemble is in close competition with aespa for the most wins.
When the 22nd Korean Music Awards takes place on February 27, KST, it will be interesting to see how these two polar opposite acts are rewarded for their outstanding releases in 2024!
