The Minnesota Vikings are currently projected to receive one third-round compensatory pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. With the departure of both Kirk Cousins and Danielle Hunter, the expectation was that the Vikings would get two third-round compensatory picks.
There has been some controversy surrounding the 2025 compensatory picks with the signing of cornerback Shaquill Griffin potentially robbing the Vikings of one. Now, these are just projections and nothing is certain yet. However, Over The Cap’s Nick Korte, the foremost expert when it comes to compensatory picks, believes the Vikings will only receive one third-round pick.
The Vikings don’t see it the same way that Korte does, as The Star Tribune’s Ben Goessling said on KFAN during an appearance on Paul Allen’s radio show.
“I was told yesterday that Shaq Griffin did not cost them, I mean, this idea that Shaq Griffin directly cost them a third-round pick, I was told is not true. I don’t think it’s quite that simple. I don’t know that they’re going to end up with two of them at this point, but I was told by people in the know that this is not the case.”
This raises some interesting questions. What do the Vikings know that the expert on the subject doesn’t? Is there something that the NFL has told the Vikings that will give them two third-round picks and Griffin’s contract doesn’t qualify like we believe it does?
Only time will tell who ends up being right, but it is certainly interesting that the Vikings believe something different.
