A long-standing stance from Canelo Alvarez will break on May 4 when he faces fellow Mexican competitor Jaime Munguia in Las Vegas. Canelo’s status as the undisputed super middleweight champion is on the line.
Canelo is a four-division champion, needing only eleven months to unify the super middleweight division. He started his career fighting various opponents from Mexico, but over the years, that has decreased. Recent bouts include wins against Alfredo Angulo and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., the Chavez fight in 2017 the last one.
He has been adamant about not fighting Mexican fighters. That has included a potential fight against David Benavidez, a clash fight fans have requested for years. Canelo sees Munguia’s skills and mindset as reasons to break down his walls and take on the man born in Tijuana.
“I said I wouldn’t fight against a Mexican fighter but someone respectful like Munguia, who earned his chance, fight after fight – it’s something that I’m glad we were able to make happen,” Canelo said via Boxing Scene. “I hope that everybody can see that this is going to be great for everyone involved, and for Mexico in particular.
“Munguia is a disciplined guy. He really hits hard. He can be a power puncher, and I like the challenges. I want to go after hungry [fighters] like Munguia who want to give their all inside the ring and give the fans the show that they deserve.”
The 33-year-old faces a 27-year-old Munguia, winner of 34 fights via knockout. A former super welterweight champion, Munguia is coming off impressive wins against Sergiy Derevyanchenko and John Ryder. The Golden Boy product looks to beat a pound-for-pound great and hold gold.
