A former WWE tradition returns when WWE heads to Saudi Arabia for its King and Queen of the Ring event on May 25.
It is a continuation of WWE’s partnership with the Ministry of Sport, which started in 2018 and comprises a 10-year strategic multi-platform partnership. The King of the Ring is showcased as a single entity for the first time since 2015 and is the first to air on PPV since 2002.
The “King of the Ring” concept debuted in 1985 and was a staple of the 90s before being used sporadically in the late 2000s. It would go from one-night tournament PPV events to being featured on RAW or SmackDown. The last tournament was in 2021, which also featured the first women’s tournament. It is known to elevate the careers of wrestlers, with winners including Bret “The Hitman” Hart, Owen Hart, and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin.
