On Friday, January 24, the final episode of Universe League aired. The survival show, which featured aspects of sports interwoven into the competition, gathered dozens of trainees, and ultimately, nine were selected to debut in All-Time Hall Of Fame.
Many of the individuals selected stood out for their own reasons, like Cha Woongki, who previously appeared in multiple survival shows and was in one other K-pop group.
Another stand-out participant was JL (also known as JL Gaspar), who ranked first overall with over 3 million votes.
JL has also stood out for another reason: he achieved a first in K-Pop—he is the first male Filipino idol to rank first on a survival show!
JL, whose real name is Jay Lawrence Gaspar, is 20 years old and is from Muntinlupa, Metro Manila, Philippines. He was first announced as a trainee under ShowBT Entertainment, training at the SB Talent Camp.
Before his debut, he was part of a local dance troupe and performed as a backup dancer.
He and several other trainees were announced to have “graduated” in 2023 and began preparing for their official debut. In March 2023, PLUUS officially debuted, featuring JL as the youngest member.
The 20-year-old is known to be a big K-Pop fan, having joined K-Pop cover groups. The idol also active on social media, where he has interacted with posts featuring his favorite idols.

According to his profiles, the idol’s MBTI is ENTP and considers himself (and is) an all-rounder. The idol also has expressed interest in photography and cooking, and is apparently a fan of the Twilight Saga.
The group formed through Universe League does not yet have a debut date, but many are tuned in and ready to see JL shine in this new group!
