Group disbandments happen for various reasons; sometimes, these can shock fans. One boy group’s disbandment was reported to involve a “forbidden” relationship and alleged cheating.
In 2017, BG Entertainment debuted its first boy group, 14U. The group was odd at the time, as it had 14 members, larger than most promoting groups.
Their debut was also a bit different. They “debuted” in April 2017 with a single but did not officially debut until July of that year with their track “VVV.”
After releasing their second mini-album, member Doyul entered a hiatus and ultimately left the group for personal reasons. The group’s third and final release, Compact (N.E.W.S), was their best-performing album, reaching third on the Gaon Album Chart.
A new member, Gun, was added to the group, returning them to 14 members. However, in May 2019, it was announced that the group had disbanded, with the reason initially believed to be favoritism.
A news report claimed that one of the members, who was in his early 20’s, had an “inappropriate” relationship with a staff member who was in her late 30s. Despite their 10+ years difference in age, the member and the staff allegedly had sexual relations during their promotional trips to Japan. The other members and staff eventually discovered their relationship. The member allegedly claimed they were in love when confronted about their relationship.
It was rumored that the couple broke-up due to the idol having an affair with a foreign fan, resulting in the disbandment. The initial news report claimed that the other members’ parents demanded their contracts be broken. BG Entertainment denied these claims, however, that was the end of the company.
Since then, many of the former members have re-debuted in other groups; Kohyeon and Kwon Hyeop are currently members of WAKER; Hyunwoong and Sejin are members of D-ONE; and Loudi has debuted as a solo artist.
