Top Liga MX seed Club America hope to continue the Mexican league’s chances of challenging for the Leagues Cup title as they take on St. Louis City on Tuesday in the Round of 16.
Thanks to their standing within the overall seeding, Club America have “hub rights” through the semifinals of the Leagues Cup, meaning they will “host” matches on the west coast to limit their travel. They have split their matches between Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego and Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, which are about two hours apart.
Six Mexican clubs remain amongst the final 16 sides in the competition, one more than last year’s total of five.
St. Louis, meanwhile, will be hoping that a Leagues Cup run can spark a turnaround in MLS play, as they sit 13th in the Western Conference, 10 points adrift from a playoff position. With just nine league matches remaining in the regular season, that is a gargantuan gap to make up, but a knockout run would be a boost to their season prospects regardless.

Club America vs. St Louis City lineups & team news
Club America played their first Leagues Cup match in the Round of 32 win over Atlas, having earned a bye to the knockout stage as Liga MX winners last season. They filled the schedule gap with a pair of friendlies against Premier League sides Chelsea and Aston Villa, but picked up a few injury issues in the latest Leagues Cup match.
Sebastian Caceres was withdrawn at halftime due to discomfort in both his back and leg, while Cristian Borja came off with a calf injury. Both defenders are considered doubts for this game.
They’re missing American international Alex Zendejas due to a leg injury, and he will not be back until at least the later stages of this competition should Club America reach that far. Diego Valdez returned from a foot injury to come off the bench in the Atlas win, but Jorge Mere is missing due to an ACL tear.
Club America projected starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Malagon (GK) — I. Reyes, Araujo, Lichnovsky, Calderon — Fidalgo, J. dos Santos — Dilrosun, E. Sanchez, B. Rodriguez — Martin.
St. Louis City have a lengthy injury list that has hindered them significantly this season.
Wingers Rasmus Alm and Celio Pompeu have both been absent since late June with injuries, and while they are both expected to return soon, reintegrating them into the squad will take a bit of time. Meanwhile, striker Joao Klauss has been missing with a knee issue since late June which is sapping the squad of goal scoring prowess.
Star defender Joakim Nilsson is also out with a hamstring injury, while midfielder Tomas Ostrak rests an ankle issue. Both also have the potential to return soon.
St. Louis City projected starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Burki (GK) — Totland, Yaro, Hiebert, Reid — Durkin, Lowen — Thorisson, Teuchert, Hartel — Becher.
Club America vs. St Louis City prediction, betting odds & lines
- Score prediction: Club America 3-1 St. Louis City
St. Louis City have done well to reach the Round of 16, but have faced little in the way of top-tier competition to this point, downing mid-table MLS sides Portland and FC Dallas plus a draw with struggling Juarez.
Club America are in sensational form and have earned significant rest thanks to their standing as the top Liga MX seed. It will be far too much for the MLS side to overcome.
