The Los Angeles Chargers struggled to move the football under sixth-year quarterback Easton Stick, who finished the game with a 14.6 passer rating. Head coach Jim Harbaugh might already be looking for a new starter when the Chargers host the Los Angeles Rams next week.
Per his postgame press conference, Harbaugh said the following:
I am not naming the Week 2 starter right now. I will let practice determine that.
Harbaugh has very openly criticized the backup quarterback competition, even taking it one step further by signing UFL quarterback Luis Perez earlier this week.
Stick throwing for just 31 yards on 13 passing attempts was concerning. More alarming, however, was the carelessness with the football. Stick put both the football and his players in harm’s way at times, leading to one interception and a potential Hayden Hurst injury on the same play.
Perez stood out as the team’s passing yards leader, a feat significantly more impressive given he joined the Chargers four days ago and likely did not even know the names of every offensive player he was on the field with tonight. He was far from perfect, but he at minimum looked more the part than Max Duggan and has already jumped UDFA Casey Bauman on the depth chart. One week may not be enough to get Perez to start over Stick, but keep an eye out for in-game snap shares.
