The Euro 2024 final is here, with Spain and England set to battle it out at Berlin’s Olympistadion for European football’s ultimate crown.
Spain are the favourites after playing some entertaining and eye-catching football throughout the tournament, taking down heavyweights such as 2022 World Cup finalists France and Germany en route to the final, with the electrifying 17-year-old Lamine Yamal having a brilliant campaign and becoming one of the biggest names in the sport already.
Despite being stacked with generational talent, England’s road to a second straight final has been more arduous, with the Three Lions having to dig deep and play rigid football to get to the big dance.
The Three Lions needed some dramatic, late escapes to make it to the final, but it is clear they have a never-say-die spirit and several clutch, world-class difference-makers even if their football hasn’t been the best and has left a lot to be desired for at this European championship under coach Gareth Southgate.
Football fans all over the world are set to tune in on Sunday’s grand finale!

England vs. Spain projected lineups & team news
Gareth Southgate has settled on a 3-4-2-1 system for England since the quarterfinal win over Switzerland, but he still has a couple of selection dilemmas to make for the final.
Left-footed full-back Luke Shaw, who scored the Three Lions’ only goal in the Euro 2020 final against Italy, will be vying for a start at left wing-back ahead of right-footed defender Kieran Trippier, having overcome an injury that he carried over to Germany. After coming off the bench in the last two games and replacing Trippier at half-time in Dortmund, the Manchester United defender is not locked in to start as Southgate tries to formulate a plan to restrict the dazzling Lamine Yamal on Spain’s right wing.
Calls for the energetic Ollie Watkins to start ahead of Harry Kane, who has struggled to make notable impact and cut a frustrated figure for much of the tournament despite getting on the scoresheet three times, will ramp up after Watkins scored the winner off the bench against the Netherlands. However, it’s likely that Southgate will bank on his best striker, leader and captain to come good when it matters the most.
There have been no reports of any fresh injury concerns throughout the semifinal, so England should be unchanged elsewhere.
England projected starting lineup (3-4-2-1, right to left): Pickford (GK) — Walker, Stones, Guehi — Saka, Mainoo, Rice, Trippier — Foden, Bellingham — Kane.
Injuries: None.
Suspensions: None.
Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente will receive a double defensive boost for Sunday’s grand finale with centre-backs Robin Le Normand and Dani Carvajal both returning from respective one-match bans.
They are poised to slot straight back in place of Nacho Fernandez and 38-year-old Jesus Navas, the latter of whom had a tough time of things against the electrifying Kylian Mbappe last time out and went off with a knock in the second half.
Striker Alvaro Morata started against the French after reports that he too had collected his second yellow card of the tournament in the 2-1 extra-time victory over hosts Germany in the quarterfinals proved to be incorrect.
However, Spain have been handed a freak injury scare over their captain, who looked to hurt his knee when a security guard slipped and clashed with him during the post-match celebrations. Morata was wincing as he made his way off the pitch, raising doubts about his availability for Sunday’s final, but De la Fuente is hopeful that he will be fine to lead his side out of the tunnel in Berlin.
The Spain boss said in his post-match press conference: “Alvaro, we have to wait and see tomorrow. We believe it’s nothing. It hurts but we think it’s nothing.”
Otherwise De La Fuente should have a full-strength squad available at his disposal to pick starting XI from, with only Pedri missing with the knee injury he suffered against Germany. RB Leipzig’s Dani Olmo replaced him against France and will certainly retain his place in midfield after bagging the winner against Les Bleus.
Spain projected starting lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Simon (GK) — Carvajal, Le Normand, Laporte, Cucurella — Dani Olmo, Rodri, Fabian Ruiz — Lamine Yamal, Morata, Nico Williams.
Injuries: Pedri (knee).
Suspensions: None.
