There’s a reason why Sergei Bobrovsky is the only active goaltender with multiple Vezina Trophies. Though he’s experienced ups and downs, when he’s on, he’s on. No one knows that better than the Oilers.
The Panthers head into Monday night with a 1-0 series lead in the 2024 Stanley Cup Final thanks to the stellar play of their veteran goaltender. Bobrovsky was sensational in Game 1, turning aside all 32 shots he faced from a high-powered Oilers attack.
At times, Edmonton was running circles around Florida, as Connor McDavid and Co. generated chance after chance in the offensive zone. But the Panthers’ last line of defense is the best goaltender the Oilers have seen yet in the 2024 NHL playoffs, and they got a taste of what a locked-in Bobrovsky looks like.

Offensively, Carter Verhaeghe and Evan Rodrigues were the two goal scorers for Paul Maurice’s unit, along with Eetu Luostarinen, who sealed the victory with an empty-net goal in the dying seconds. Aleksander Barkov dished out two assists and was successful in keeping McDavid off the scoresheet for only the fifth time in 19 playoff games.
As Maurice said after the team’s win, the Panthers have plenty of room for improvement. If not for a classic Bobrovsky showing, Florida could certainly be the team down a game in the series.
Will it be another winning performance from the Eastern Conference champs? Or can McDavid tie the series before it shifts to Edmonton?
