The New England Patriots frequently held joint practices with other teams around the league during Bill Belichick’s tenure as head coach, but will that trend continue with Jerod Mayo now at the helm?
According to ESPN’s Mike Reiss, Mayo and Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni have discussed holding a joint practice session in August on the practice fields outside of Gillette Stadium.
The two teams have played each other with some regularity in the preseason, and if the two teams meet during the second week of exhibition games, they plan to practice together.
Reiss reports that Mayo is in favor of only holding single-day practice sessions to limit fighting that can sometimes occur when two teams meet for multiple days.
This would give both teams a chance to plan things out and script scenarios to see how they’ll both handle certain aspects of the game.
It will be very interesting to see how Mayo’s roster competes with a team that should be considered a contender again in 2024. Even if it’s just a practice, the competitive juices can get flowing.
