Former Boston Red Sox president and CEO Larry Lucchino has died at 78 years old, according to the Boston Globe.
Lucchino was with the Red Sox from 2002-15 following John Henry’s purchase of the team in December 2001 from John Harrington.
During his time with the Red Sox, the team won three World Series championships and ended the 86-year drought for the club.
Following his time with Boston, he joined a group that bought the Red Sox’s Triple-A affiliate, the Pawtucket Red Sox, and helped them move to their new home at Polar Park in Worcester, Massachusetts.
In 2016, he was named chairman of “The Jimmy Fund,” helping benefit Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, where Lucchino was treated during his own battles with cancer.
Lucchino also worked with the Baltimore Orioles (president from 1988-93) and San Diego Padres (president and CEO from 1995-2001).
