Kansas escaped an upset bid by Samford in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to advance to its 17th consecutive second round in school history. The Jayhawks lost in the second round in 2023 but won the national championship in 2022.
The No. 4 Jayhawks face No. 5 Gonzaga, who stomped No. 12 McNeese by 21 points in the opening round to make the second round for the 15th consecutive time.
Kansas won despite the loss of standout guard Kevin McCullar Jr., who will miss the entire tournament with a knee injury. Five Jayhawks scored in double figures in the first round, led by K.J. Adams with 20 and Hunter Dickinson with 19 points and 20 rebounds.
Gonzaga was led by forwards Graham Ike and Anton Watson. Both registered double-doubles in the big win over McNeese.
The Bulldogs have the offensive advantage, as Gonzaga averaged 84.9 points per game heading into the tournament, the seventh-most in the country. Kansas averaged 75.8 points.
