NC State pulled off the improbable last week, winning five games in five days to win the ACC Tournament and secure a bid to the Big Dance.
Now it’s time to see if the Wolfpack have any more magic in them, as they tangle with Texas Tech in a first round clash on Thursday night.
As they showed ad nauseam last week, NC State boasts plenty of firepower. Senior guard D.J. Horne is averaging a career-high 16.9 points per game this season. Senior forward D.J. Burns — at 6-foot-9 and 275 pounds — dominated the ACC Tournament with his bruising physique and deft passing. His frontcourt mate, Mohamed Diarra, set an ACC record for total rebounds in a single tournament, with 60.
But Texas Tech is stiff competition. Grant McCasland has his team dancing in his first year at the helm, and these aren’t the Red Raiders of old: They tout a high-flying offense, rather than a trade-marked stingy defense. Though their defense is still strong, it is not their forte.
Sophomore guard Pop Isaacs is the go-to guy, leading the way with 15.9 points per game. But four other players average in double-figures, making for a dangerous, multi-pronged offense.
