No. 2 Purdue looks to inch closer towards its second consecutive Big Ten regular season championship on Sunday when the Boilermakers take on Michigan.
On Thursday, Purdue (24-3) rebounded from a surprising loss to Ohio State with a beatdown of Rutgers, 96-68.
Zach Edey is assembling another monstrous season, once again the odds-on favorite to win the Wooden Award as the nation’s best player. Edey, who scored 25 against the Scarlet Knights, is averaging 23.2 points and 11.9 rebounds per game — the second and third-highest marks in the nation, respectively.
Meanwhile, the picture is far less rosy in Ann Arbor. Things have unraveled for Michigan, as Juwan Howard’s team has fallen to 8-19 and 3-13 in the Big Ten. On Thursday, the Wolverines fell to Northwestern, 76-62, for their ninth loss in their past ten games.
To make matters worse, Olivier Nkamhoua, their second-leading scorer, is out for the season with a wrist injury. Nkamhoua had been averaging 14.8 points and 7.1 rebounds per game.
That leaves sophomore point guard Dug McDaniel — eligible to play on Sunday amid his road game only suspension — to shoulder more of the burden as the Wolverines vie for the upset.
The two teams are meeting for the second time this season. Back on Jan. 23 in West Lafayette, Purdue rolled to a 99-67 victory, shooting 52% from the field and 67% from beyond the arc in the rout.
