Zach Edey, the reigning Naismith College Player of the Year, and second-ranked Purdue will try to extend their winning streak to 10 games when the Boilermakers travel to a new-look Ohio State on Sunday.
The Buckeyes fired coach Chris Holtmann on Feb. 14. Holtmann had four years remaining on his contract that ran through the 2027-28 season.
Jake Diebler, associate head coach of the men’s basketball team, will serve as the team’s interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
The Boilermakers have the look of potential national champions; they took down Minnesota, 84-76, on Thursday night.
Purdue improved to 23-2 overall and 12-2 in the Big Ten with an 84-76 win over Minnesota. It was the Boilermakers’ 14 straight home win as Purdue improved to 13-0 in Mackey Arena.
Edey recorded his ninth straight double-double with 24 points, 15 rebounds and 2 assists against Minnesota. It marked his 57th career double-double and 18th of the season.
Edey now has 2,115 points and 1,143 rebounds in his career. He needs six rebounds to break the school record for career rebounds (Joe Barry Carroll – 1,148). He moved into a tie for fifth on the Big Ten’s all-time rebounds list.
Edey is the fourth player in Big Ten history with 2,100 points and 1,100 rebounds (Trayce Jackson-Davis, Ethan Happ, Joe Barry Carroll).
Braden Smith tallied 16 points, nine assists, eight rebounds and four steals in the victory over the Golden Gophers. He is the second player nationally this season to reach those marks in a game with Tulane’s Kevin Cross, who had 25 points, 12 assists, 12 rebounds and 6 steals against Furman.
Smith now has 10 games of at least 10 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists – tied for the third most in America
The 23-2 start through 25 games is the Boilermakers’ best mark in school history, and they’ll look to keep rolling against Ohio State, which is having a disappointing season.
Holtmann was fired after the Buckeyes lost for the ninth time in 11 games with a 62-54 setback at Wisconsin. The loss dropped the Buckeyes to 4-10 in the Big Ten and 14-11 overall.
Holtmann led Butler to three straight NCAA tournaments before Ohio State hired him to replace Thad Matta in 2017. Holtmann had a record of 137-86 in seven seasons with the program.
Holtmann is owed the $ 12.8 million remaining on his contract. A search for the program’s next head coach will commence at the end of this season with new Athletics Director Ross Bjork leading the search.
Bjork officially starts as athletics director on July 1, but he will begin work at Ohio State on March 1 in an interim role as senior advisor to the athletics director, reporting to the president.
