Caitlin Clark is just eight points shy of breaking the NCAA women’s scoring record entering Thursday’s matchup with Michigan in Iowa City.
All eyes in the college basketball world are on Clark, who scored 31 points in Sunday’s loss to Nebraska to pull even closer to the record held by former Washington standout Kelsey Plum. After dazzling throughout the first three quarters, Clark fell silent in the fourth quarter, missing all six of her shot attempts as the Hawkeyes coughed up a double-digit lead.
Iowa — now ranked as the No. 4 team in the country — will look to bounce back against a solid Michigan team. The Wolverines (16-9) sit in the middle of the Big Ten with a 7-6 conference record. Junior guard Laila Phelia is the team’s leading scorer, averaging 16.1 points per game.

It’s the first time this season that Michigan will have to contend with Clark, who leads the nation in scoring at 32.1 points per game. Much like the rest of the Big Ten, the Wolverines are well-acquainted with Clark’s exploits: In four career games against Michigan, Clark is averaging almost 35 points per contest.
Clark continues to rack up the accolades. In Sunday’s game, she notched her 1,000th career assist, becoming the sixth player to reach that threshold. And, as Clark gets set to pass Plum’s mark, ‘Pistol’ Pete Maravich’s mark of 3,367 points — the most in NCAA history, men’s or women’s — will be next in line to fall.
