It’s been nearly two decades since a team won back-to-back Super Bowls. That hasn’t stopped the Chiefs from getting back to the doorstep of another championship, nor has an offense that didn’t look anything like the Kansas City offenses of the past for much of the season.
Anchored by a terrific defense and Patrick Mahomes’ patience with an inconsistent group of receivers, the Chiefs are back on the NFL’s biggest stage anyway. Standing in the way of a third title in five years are the 49ers, who feel they have some unfinished business in Super Bowl 58.
San Francisco enters Sunday as the slight favorite, but the inexperience of former Mr. Irrelevant QB Brock Purdy has created some doubts about the 49ers’ championship hopes along the way. Purdy did his best to erase those doubts with comeback wins over the Packers and Lions to reach the Super Bowl, and just one win now separates him from a special place in NFL history.

The 49ers’ offense has been a machine for much of the season, with four dynamic weapons in Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle, Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk at Purdy’s disposal. Cracking a Steve Spagnuolo-led Chiefs defense that has made life difficult for opposing quarterbacks all season might be one of the biggest challenges of Kyle Shanahan’s career as the seventh-year coach looks to put past Super Bowl collapses behind him.
LIVE: Follow Taylor Swift’s best moments from Super Bowl 58
A Chiefs win would leave no doubt that Mahomes is leading a dynasty. It would make Mahomes, Kelce and Andy Reid, among others, three-time Super Bowl champions. While the 49ers have been in this position before, it’s been 29 years since their last Super Bowl victory. It takes a special group to finish the job, and the 49ers believe they have it four years after blowing a late lead against Mahomes and the Chiefs on this same stage.

5:50 p.m. — Big Red is dressed in his signature red, and he met up with the Eagles brass an hour before kickoff. Reid spent 14 seasons in Philadelphia before heading to Kansas City.

4:22 p.m. — In case you missed it: Kadarius Toney does not appear to be injured. A year after he had a critical return to set up a Chiefs touchdown in the Super Bowl, Kansas City doesn’t want to take any chances by playing him.

It seems CBS’ powers-that-be would rather their soccer experts offer surface-level musings about an NFL game than be tapped into the AFCON final. Go figure.

11:38 a.m.: Did Drake curse the Chiefs?
The Grammy-winning rapper placed a $ 1.15 million bet on Kansas City to win the Super Bowl. But he has a history of losing such bets, which has become a known (and much lampooned) phenomenon on social media.
Drake did bet on the Chiefs to beat the Eagles in the 2023 Super Bowl, though, so Kansas City might be immune from the so-called “Drake curse.”
