The Gonzaga men’s basketball team makes it’s first-ever trip to Rupp Arena when the Bulldogs play No. 17 Kentucky on Saturday, Feb. 10.
The Wildcats had some uncharacteristic struggles and lost two home games last week before routing Vanderbilt 109-77 on the road. The win was especially impressive considering Tre Mitchell and DJ Wagner did not play because of injuries.
Coach John Calipari used three players to make up for the absence, and each of them delivered a solid performance. Aaron Bradshaw had 12 points and seven rebounds, Jordan Burks scored a career-high 13 points on 6 for 6 shooting, and Justin Edwards had a career-high 17 points in 20 minutes.
Kentucky improved to 16-6 overall and 6-4 in the SEC.
The Wildcats played well defensively and that will be key against Gonzaga that can get up-and-down the floor and play a high-scoring game.
Kentucky has three seven-footers — Ugonna Onyenso, Aaron Bradshaw, and Zvonimir Ivisic — that can create matchup problems inside the paint. The Bulldogs will have to account for that size.
After some early struggle, Gonzaga is playing much better and has won six of its last seven games. Braden Huff scored 25 points, Anton Watson added 20 and Gonzaga beat Portland 96-64 on Wednesday night.
Huff also had seven rebounds, and Watson was 9 for 11 from the field, including 2 for 3 from 3-point range, and grabbed five rebounds.
Nolan Hickman had 12 points and shot 4 for 7, including 4 for 6 from beyond the arc. Ryan Nembhard had 10 points and a game-high six assists with no turnovers.
The Zags (17-6, 8-2 West Coast Conference) made a season-high 15 three-pointers on 33 attempts (45.5 percent).
Gonzaga have made it to 24 straight NCAA tournaments — second only to Michigan State (25) and Kansas (33) — and a win against Kentucky would bolster their chances this year.
