The 10th-ranked Illinois men’s basketball team will look to keep rolling in the Big Ten when the Illini travel to Michigan State on Saturday.
Illinois had six days to prepare for the Spartans after knocking off Nebraska, 87-84, in overtime on Sunday. Coleman Hawkins had a team-high 20 points, his third 20-point performance of the season. He also converted four 3-pointers, his most in conference play this season.
Terrence Shannon Jr. forced a crucial steal with seven seconds to play in overtime while finishing with 18 points, his 26th consecutive game in double figures. Shannon also posted two rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Marcus Domask scored 10 of his 19 points in the first half, and his free throw with three seconds remaining in regulation sent the game into overtime. Domask has now hit double figures in 13 games in a row.
Ty Rodgers finished with a team-high 14 rebounds, including five on the offensive end. He has back-to-back games with double-digit boards.
The Illini out-rebounded the Cornhuskers, 50-33, recording 12 points off offensive rebounds.
Michigan State fell to 6-6 in the Big Ten with a 59-56 loss at Minnesota on Tuesday night.
Graduate guard Tyson Walker scored a game-high 20 points, his 22nd game in double figures this year and the 96th of his career. It was also Walker’s 10th game this season with at least 20 points.
Junior guard Jaden Akins added 16 points, three rebounds and two assists, hitting 6-of-11 shots from the floor and 4-of-7 from 3-point land.
Michigan State hit just 41.2 percent of its free throws (7-of-17) after holding Minnesota to 37.0 percent shooting in the first half, including 28.6 percent from 3-point range.
The Spartans shot just 34.6 percent in the second half (9-of-26), including 2-of-10 from 3-point land (20.0 percent).
