The stage was set for Josh Allen to finally get over the playoff hump against Patrick Mahomes.
The Bills, with the home crowd behind them, were driving down the field with a chance to take the lead and potentially even deprive the Chiefs of a chance to possess the ball again. Needing just 26 yards out of the two-minute warning to take the lead, the Bills went away from what was working and instead picked up zero.
Allen threw two incompletions as the Bills turned away from the running game, and Buffalo was forced to settle for a game-tying field goal attempt from Tyler Bass. That’s when longtime Bills fans saw their nightmare come true a second time, as Bass’ kick took a hard turn to the right and missed. The Chiefs quickly picked up one final first down and ran off the field at Highmark Stadium with Mahomes’ first road playoff win in hand.
Kansas City’s offense ran about as efficiently as it has all season, with Mahomes throwing only six incompletions and Isiah Pacheco gashing the Bills for an average of 6.5 yards per carry. Through the air, Mahomes flashed his all too familiar connection with Travis Kelce, hitting the future Hall of Fame tight end for two touchdowns.
MORE: Mahomes, Kelce set playoff record with two more touchdowns
The Chiefs have punched their ticket to a sixth consecutive AFC championship, though this time they will have to go on the road and face a Ravens team with the likely MVP in Lamar Jackson along with a vaunted defense. Mahomes has proven he can win on the road in the playoffs, and Kansas City won’t be short on confidence at M&T Bank Stadium on Sunday.
For the Bills, Sunday’s crushing loss will be seen as a missed opportunity to change the perception of the franchise. While Allen played well in defeat once again, he’ll enter his seventh NFL season still seeking even a shred of the playoff success Mahomes and Joe Burrow have enjoyed. Buffalo has reached just one conference title game in the Allen era, and the path won’t get any easier with key players hitting free agency while other standout quarterbacks emerge in the AFC.
The Sporting News tracked live scoring updates and highlights from Sunday’s divisional-round playoff game between the Chiefs and Bills. Check out all of the key moments you might have missed from the Chiefs’ win.

Chiefs vs. Bills results, highlights from 2024 NFL playoff game
(All times Eastern)
FINAL: Chiefs 27, Bills 24
9:45 p.m. — This game is OVER. The Bills can’t finish, and the Chiefs are heading to their sixth consecutive AFC title game to face Lamar Jackson and the Ravens in Baltimore.
9:41 p.m. — Pacheco gets the first down, and the Chiefs are going to advance to the AFC championship. The Bills had an opportunity to take that weight off their shoulders and finally knock off Kansas City in the playoffs, but they’ll have to live with this defeat for at least the next year.
9:39 p.m. — Bass’ kick is NO GOOD. The Bills mismanage that sequence out of the two-minute warning, and the Chiefs are in position to walk out of Buffalo with a win if they can get a first down.
Tyler Bass missed it.
Devastating for #Bills fans. pic.twitter.com/WUElGRyOTk
— JPAFootball (@jasrifootball) January 22, 2024
9:38 p.m. — The Bills might have been better off just running the ball there as Allen finds nobody open. Here comes Tyler Bass…
9:37 p.m. — Allen takes a risk on second down and throws incomplete in the end zone. No one was close. Here comes 3rd & 9.
9:34 p.m. — The Bills are committed to running this clock as low as possible now that they’re into field goal range. We’ve hit the two-minute warning with Buffalo driving.
9:33 p.m. — Allen hits Sherfield with a laser for another first down. The Bills are now firmly in field goal range.
9:31 p.m. — Joe Brady draws up a beautiful play to get the ball in Shakir’s hands and easily pick up the first down. That was a hold-your-breath sequence for Bills fans.

9:30 p.m. — Allen is only able to run for a few yards, and Spencer Brown saves the Bills by recovering a fumble at the end of the play. Buffalo is going for it on 4th & 3.
9:29 p.m. — Allen is nearly intercepted by McDuffie on 2nd & 10, and now the Bills face yet another critical third down. Buffalo might have gotten away with one there.
9:28 p.m. — Allen takes it himself and picks up another first down for the Bills. Buffalo still has work to do to get into field goal range.
9:27 p.m. — Now Kincaid picks up eight yards after Knox walks off with a potential head injury.
9:26 p.m. — Dawson Knox picks up a crucial first down but appears to be hurt.
9:25 p.m. — Allen launches a ball downfield to start the drive, but it’s through Diggs’ hands. Between Sherfield and Diggs, Allen’s receivers aren’t doing him any favors late in this game.
9:23 p.m. — So the stage is set for Josh Allen, who has 8:23 to work with as his team trails by three. A field goal ties it, but giving the ball back to the Chiefs with the score tied probably isn’t ideal for Buffalo. If the Bills can get down the field, the question will be how much time they can knock off the clock.
9:21 p.m. — Mahomes stays on his feet for longer than the Bills wanted, but they still get him down for a gain of just a couple yards. Kansas City will punt for the first time tonight after getting stopped twice.
9:20 p.m. — Mahomes throws low on 2nd & 10, so we have another critical third down coming up.
9:17 p.m. — The Bills’ defense appeared to force a three-and-out, but a flag came in very, very late for pass interference. A fresh set of downs for Kansas City.
9:14 p.m. — Sam Martin’s punt isn’t a pretty one, and it’s on the Bills’ defense to show some kind of a pulse here if Buffalo wants to preserve any chance of advancing.
9:13 p.m. — Allen takes a huge shot on third down, but Trent Sherfield isn’t able to come up with the diving catch. Buffalo will punt.
9:10 p.m. — The Bills have found a way to potentially throw away this opportunity, as they lose four yards on a James Cook carry and now have a 3rd & 12 scenario coming up. Meanwhile, Shakir is down after taking a hard hit.
9:08 p.m. FUMBLE — The call is overturned. It’s a FUMBLE through the end zone by Hardman, and the Bills regain possession after nearly going down by 10. That’s a sequence of events that could change the season for both teams.
9:05 p.m. — Hardman loses the ball for the second time tonight, but he’s ruled down by contact. Buffalo is challenging, hoping that the ball went through the back of the end zone for a touchback…

9:04 p.m. — Pacheco runs the Chiefs into a quick 1st & Goal opportunity.
9:03 p.m. — The Bills run a fake, and it falls well short. That’s a calamity for Buffalo. The Chiefs are already set up with a scoring opportunity.

9:02 p.m. — Allen’s pass is tipped by George Karlaftis, and the Chiefs’ offense will get a chance to effectively put this game away with a touchdown.
9:01 p.m. — James Cook gets buried for a loss of three yards to set up a key 3rd & 5 already. The Bills likely can’t afford to go three-and-out with the way their defense is playing.
Chiefs 27, Bills 24
8:56 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — Pacheco pushes ahead and puts the Chiefs back in front! A lifeless response by the Bills’ defense as these offenses continue to dominate.

End of third quarter: Bills 24, Chiefs 20
8:51 p.m. — Buffalo brings pressure, but it blows up as Valdes-Scantling gets open for a huge gain. The Chiefs are quickly back into the red zone.

Bills 24, Chiefs 20
8:44 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — Wow! Khalil Shakir had L’Jarius Sneed draped all over him, but he dives for a perfect pass from Allen and somehow gets his knee down for the touchdown. What a swing. The Bills are back in front.

8:43 p.m. — The drive has unraveled a bit for the Bills, as Allen finds no open receiver on second down and Buffalo is called for delay of game on third down.
8:39 p.m. — Ty Johnson needs two yards and gets much more. He barrels his way into a 1st & Goal situation for the Bills as Buffalo continues to wear down Kansas City’s run defense.
8:36 p.m. — Trent McDuffie gets called for illegal use of hands, turning what would’ve been a critical third down into a Bills first down.
8:34 p.m. — Cook pushes the Bills up to midfield as Joe Brady sticks to the running game.
8:32 p.m. — The Bills’ running game continues to rumble as James Cook and Ty Johnson help Buffalo pick up a first down.
Chiefs 20, Bills 17
8:26 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — It’s the second touchdown of the night for Kelce, who sneaks in gets that ball to the pylon to give the Chiefs the lead. The Bills’ defense needed a statement drive to start the half and couldn’t come up with one.

8:23 p.m. — Mahomes runs and just keeps on running. The Bills couldn’t catch up to him until he was all the way to the red zone.

8:07 p.m. — Kansas City kneels on it knowing it’ll start the second half with the ball. Both teams get into another skirmish as the final seconds tick away. Buffalo goes to the locker room with the lead, but a big moment for the defense awaits.
8:05 p.m. — The Chiefs have 20 seconds to work with, though they set themselves back with a holding penalty and might not feel the risk is worthwhile here.
Bills 17, Chiefs 13
8:00 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — Allen takes it in himself for the touchdown! The Bills needed that momentum swing with Kansas City getting the ball to start the second half, and they have their lead back.

7:58 p.m. — Shakir hauls in a first down catch at the two-yard line, and it certainly looks like a catch despite protests by the Chiefs. Buffalo has 29 seconds and two timeouts to work with.
7:57 p.m. — Cook drops what very well could’ve been a touchdown pass from Allen. He will regret that one if Buffalo doesn’t punch it in on third down.
7:55 p.m. — Allen puts some moves on the Chiefs’ defense and runs all the way down to about the 11. What a play! That was similar to his long touchdown run against the Steelers on Monday.
7:54 p.m. — Allen draws gasps from the crowd as he improvises a pass to Latavius Murray when it looked like he’d just run the ball up the middle. Murray goes for 15 yards.
7:53 p.m. — The Bills are out to midfield after a nice catch-and-run by Diggs up the middle.
7:48 p.m. — Trent McDuffie is back in the game for the Chiefs as James Cook picks up a first down for Buffalo.
Chiefs 13, Bills 10
7:43 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — No one was near Travis Kelce. It’s a standard Mahomes-to-Kelce touchdown in the playoffs to give the Chiefs the lead.

7:37 p.m. — Khalil Shakir only gets four yards, and the Bills will punt for the first time (by either team) tonight.

7:35 p.m. — Chiefs CB Trent McDuffie is on the sideline being evaluated now.
7:32 p.m. — Chiefs safety Mike Edwards has been ruled out with a concussion.
Bills 10, Chiefs 6
7:30 p.m. FIELD GOAL — Mahomes’ fourth down pass sails high, setting up Butker’s second field goal of the night. The Chiefs cut into Buffalo’s lead but will see that drive as a missed opportunity.
7:29 p.m. — Mecole Hardman fumbles on a hard hit from Rasul Douglas, but Justin Watson saves the day for Kansas City and quickly recovers.
7:27 p.m. — Rice goes up and grabs a third down pass from Mahomes to keep the Chiefs’ touchdown hopes very much alive.
7:24 p.m. — Neither defense is playing well right now. Mahomes finds Kelce in stride for 29 yards to give the Chiefs an instant scoring opportunity.

7:15 p.m. — Buffalo is all in on the running game right now, and it has them down to the Kansas City 5-yard line.
7:12 p.m. — The Bills dominated time of possession in the first quarter, holding onto the ball for 11:27 of the first 15 minutes. With Joe Brady emphasizing the running game, you’d have to think that was part of their strategy coming into tonight.
End of first quarter: Chiefs 3, Bills 3
7:11 p.m. — James Cook picks up another Bills first down, and Josh Allen finishes out the quarter with an 8-yard run to take Buffalo into the red zone. The Bills couldn’t get into the end zone on their last drive. Will the Chiefs’ red zone defense rise up again?

7:02 p.m. — Mahomes recovers well from a low snap on third down, but Dane Jackson breaks up a nice pass to Justin Watson. Harrison Butker is coming out into the wind.
7:00 p.m. — Now Mahomes hits Kelce for the first down as the Bills’ defense struggles to get situated.
6:59 p.m. — Mahomes evades a sack on second down and finds a wide-open Rashee Rice, who pushes the Chiefs just past midfield.
Bills 3, Chiefs 0
6:54 p.m. FIELD GOAL — The wind affects Bass’ kick, but he gets it through to give Buffalo an early advantage. 3-0, Bills.
6:53 p.m. — Allen’s pass is batted down, so Tyler Bass will come on for the short field goal try.
6:52 p.m. — A great block by Spencer Brown allows Kincaid to bully his way inside the 10-yard line. Let’s see if Allen can finish what’s been an impressive drive.
6:50 p.m. — The Bills are into field goal range with the help of a great sideline grab by Dalton Kincaid. The wind will be a factor for both kickers today, though.

6:46 p.m. — Wow, Allen makes a heads-up lateral pass beyond the line of scrimmage and turns a 3rd & 17 into a 4th & 1. The Chiefs might challenge whether that’s a forward pass.

6:41 p.m. — Deonte Harty takes it out to about the 30, and we are underway.
6:40 p.m. — The Chiefs win the toss (not the first time that’s happened against the Bills), but they defer. The Bills will start with the ball.
6:35 p.m. — Still a couple minutes out from kickoff as the pregame ceremonies finish up.
6:25 p.m. — In case you missed it, Bills fans have already fed the pit today.

6:20 p.m. — We’re about 10 minutes away from kickoff, and the pressure is squarely on Josh Allen and the Bills to finally notch a playoff win over Patrick Mahomes. The world is watching.
6:13 p.m. — It’s official: The race for the Lombardi Trophy is down to the Ravens, 49ers, Lions, Bills and Chiefs.
5:50 p.m. — The playoff field is about to be narrowed to five, but the Buccaneers are keeping hope alive in Detroit after allowing two touchdown drives.
