Emergency responders arrived at a multi-family home in Daejeon, South Korea after receiving a report that a 25-month-old girl had stopped breathing in the early hours of the morning. She was rushed to the hospital but didn’t survive.

Prosecutors charged the parents, a couple in their 30s, with child abuse resulting in death. Investigations revealed that the mother had fed her premature daughter a teaspoon of spicy buldak ramen sauce. Later, while giving her a bath, she hit her head on the floor. Instead of seeking medical help, the parents allegedly gave her soju from a medicine bottle.

The couple didn’t call emergency services until 1 a.m. the next day. By then, the child had died from a brain hemorrhage caused by the head injury. Bruises on her body also suggested there had been ongoing abuse.

At their first trial two months later, the parents admitted to abuse but denied intent to kill, arguing it wasn’t clear if their actions directly caused her death.

During the investigation, they claimed they struggled with the financial burden of raising a premature baby. The next hearing is set for the 20th of next month.
