The Philadelphia Phillies aren’t in the position they hoped to be right now.
Philadelphia looked like the best team in baseball at points during the 2024 Major League Baseball regular season. The Phillies ultimately finished in second place in the National League with a 95-67. Only the Los Angeles Dodgers had a better record in the National League.
It seemed like this could be the year that the Phillies got over the hump, but they are on the outside looking in after being bounced from the playoffs by the rival New York Mets.
Things didn’t work out in the Phillies’ favorite, and former Philadelphia utility man Whit Merrifield joined “Foul Territory” to discuss the team, among other topics.
“Have you seen their record after they released me? I mean, I’m just saying, numbers are numbers,” Merrifield joked. “I don’t know, man, everything that went right early on seemed to go wrong towards the end. It’s just about being hot at the right time. Look at the Mets. You look at the two teams — I’m not going to take anything away from the Mets, they’re a good team but they’re hot right now. In no world when you put those two teams on paper, do the Mets advance over the Phillies, in my opinion.”
Philadelphia certainly had some unfortunate luck down the stretch. While that is the case, fans shouldn’t be too concerned yet. Philadelphia is built to win and likely will be aggressive this winter and add even more talent.
A disappointing playoff exit like this could be a catalyst to push the front office to be even more aggressive and add another star this winter.
It’s tough that the Phillies are no longer playing, but they should be in the mix once again next year.
