Texas’ decision to join the SEC gave the Longhorns a path to even more prominence as a program. With matchups against some of Georgia, Alabama, LSU and more on tap in the years to come, Texas will have plenty of eyes on it. With that kind of schedule, however, comes plenty of risk.
Both Texas and Oklahoma won’t be able to afford many lapses against some of the nation’s powerhouses, and the Longhorns in particular have to face one of the country’s toughest non-SEC opponents in addition to their in-conference schedule.
While the 2023 season is still playing out for Steve Sarkisian’s squad, the release of the 2024 SEC schedule gives fans a chance to look ahead to the future.

Texas football 3 best SEC games in 2024
Texas vs. Oklahoma (Oct. 12)
One of Texas’ best SEC games is one that has been played regularly for more than a century. The Red River Showdown is already a college football spectacle, played at a neutral site in Dallas rather than in either team’s home stadium, and it might be more important than ever with so little margin for error for both Texas and Oklahoma in the SEC.
The Sooners got the better of the Longhorns in this season’s matchup, winning a thriller, but with Dillon Gabriel gone for Oklahoma, it might be Texas that enters with the experience advantage at quarterback.
Texas vs. Georgia (Oct. 19)
When it comes to a spot in the SEC championship game, could this Oct. 19 matchup be the difference? Georgia will attempt a revenge tour in 2024 after missing the playoff this season, while Texas is looking to assert itself as an SEC powerhouse on the same level as the Bulldogs in year one as a member of the conference.
For Georgia, the matchup is an opportunity to go into Austin and remind the Longhorns that getting by in the SEC won’t be so easy. As Alabama showed in 2023, that might be easier said than done.

Texas at Texas A&M (Nov. 30)
In recent years, Texas A&M has faced LSU during rivalry week while Texas has drawn Texas Tech. That changes in 2024 as the Longhorns and Aggies finally renew their rivalry on a weekend that could be pivotal for both teams.
Mike Elko’s new-look Texas A&M team could be looking for a signature win when the Longhorns come to town, while a spot in the SEC championship could be on the line for Texas at this point in the season.
There is nothing better than an old rivalry revisited, and the first battle between these programs in 13 years will be bitter.

SEC football schedule format for 2024
For at least one year, SEC teams will play eight conference games and at least one game against either a power conference opponent or a major independent program. The SEC has left the door open to expand to nine conference games as early as 2025.
Divisions will also be eliminated in 2024 and beyond. The SEC says a given team will face all 15 SEC teams at least twice over four years as a result, and the SEC championship matchup will simply be the top two teams in the conference.
Certain rivalry games are expected to be protected long-term, so while the long-term schedule format has yet to be finalized, matchups such as Texas and Oklahoma are likely to continue on an annual basis.
