Philadelphia 76ers stars Joel Embiid and Paul George are yet to step foot on the court together, but some are already looking to stir things up.
Oklahoma City Thunder big man Chet Holmgren recently appeared on George’s podcast, where he proposed a rather controversial question. He brought up which of Philadelphia’s stars would take the shot in a game-winning situation.
“Y’all need a bucket at the end of the game,” Holmgren said. “Who’s shooting the game-winning shot? You or [Joel Embiid]?”
“That’s a Nick Nurse question. I’m going to deflect that to Nick Nurse,” George responded. “Whoever Nick Nurse draws it up for, we’re going to get the best shot.”
“That’s a PR answer,” the OKC star joked.
The answer comes down to the situation at hand. If two points or less are needed, Embiid is the obvious solution as one of the most dominant interior players in the NBA. A 3-pointer would be a more likely opportunity for George or guard Tyrese Maxey.
George is more than accustomed to playing alongside other stars throughout his career, meaning the final shot going to Embiid will not affect him much. Kawhi Leonard, James Harden, Russell Westbrook, and Carmelo Anthony highlight the list of prominent running mates.
Alternatively, Embiid has been the No. 1 option for the bulk of his career, leaving questions around his acceptance of a final shot drawn up for his newly acquired teammate.
