Matchday 16 of the Premier League started with Liverpool taking top spot for the first time since September 2021 with a late 2-1 win at Crystal Palace.
Three days earlier, Arsenal had held firm at the summit when Declan Rice’s stoppage-time goal gave them a dramatic 4-3 win over Luton Town.
That was key as second-place Liverpool kept pace with a 2-0 victory over a Sheffield United side under new management, while Aston Villa stunned Man City with a 1-0 home win that lifted them above the defending champions.
Man United put aside recent struggles to down a similarly hapless Chelsea 2-1 at Old Trafford. On Thursday, West Ham came from behind to continue Tottenham’s recent slump and Everton soundly defeated an injury-hit Newcastle 3-0 to climb out of the relegation zone.

Champions League spots, European places 2023/24
The big news in 2023/24 is that there’s a scenario in which the Premier League could see the top five teams all qualify for the UEFA Champions League if England finishes as one of the top two performing nations in European club cup competitions.
If the FA Cup winner or Carabao Cup winner finish in the top four, the European cup berth that accompanies that title would go to the next team in the Premier League standings not already qualified for Europe.
