Group A of the Copa America 2024 sees holders Argentina as the top-sided seed.
Lionel Scaloni’s South American and world champions are the favourites to win the tournament outright and are expected to survive the group stage without too much difficulty.
Their opponents in the opening phase of the tournament will be determined by the draw, which takes place on December 7, 2023 at 7:30 p.m. ET at the James L. Knight Center in Miami, Florida.
Miami is where the final of the Copa America will take place on July 14 next year after a month-long competition in the United States.
Below is how the Group A schedule will look once all teams are confirmed alongside Argentina. Plus, there is a bracket for the knockout rounds, so the four nations will have a decent idea of what lies in store if they can progress to the quarterfinal stage and beyond.
The Sporting News will update this page once the Copa America draw is completed.

Copa America 2024 Group A: Table, standings
Each Copa America group consists of four teams. These teams each play the other once in a round-robin format. The top two from each group will progress to the quarterfinals.
Teams are ranked by points, then goal difference, and then goals scored. Should teams be level on those three criteria, the head-to-head record between those nations is used as a tiebreaker.

Copa America 2024 Group A teams
Argentina
As the reigning champions, Argentina were one of the top-seeded teams automatically assigned to Group A before the draw.
Last year’s FIFA World Cup winners, the Albiceleste have enjoyed one of their best periods in modern football since Lionel Scaloni took charge following the disappointment of World Cup 2018.
The former defender led Argentina to victory in the 2021 Copa America final over arch rivals Brazil to end their 28-year wait for a major trophy, and they followed that up by winning the Finalissima — the match between the champions of South America and Europe — 3-0 against Italy at Wembley in June 2022.
They were on a 36-game unbeaten run, one shy of Italy’s world record, when they were stunned by Saudi Arabia 2-1 in their opening group match at the World Cup last year, but they recovered to win the tournament, defeating France on penalties in the final. They are the favourites to win this year’s Copa America, although the uncertainty around the future of coach Scaloni will surely not help their preparations.
- Current FIFA world ranking: No. 1 (November, 2023)
- Regional ranking: 1st (South America)
- Copa America titles: 15
- Copa America appearances (last): 43 (2021)
- Coach: Lionel Scaloni (Argentina) since November 2018
- Key players: Julian Alvarez (Man City / England), Enzo Fernandez (Chelsea / England), Alexis Mac Allister (Liverpool / England), Emiliano Martinez (Aston Villa / England), Lionel Messi (Inter Miami / USA)
Peru
Entering the 2024 Copa America tournament, Peru are driven by a desire to bounce back from their 2019 final loss to Brazil.
Despite being ranked 35th globally and 6th in CONMEBOL, as of November 2023, Juan Reynoso’s team are focused on next summer.
With two Copa America titles and 18 past appearances, Peru can learn from their previous defeat and showcase improvement. Reynoso, who has been in charge since August 2022, has struggled in recent matches as they’re without a win in their last seven games.
The team boasts a mix of experienced players and rising talents and will be hoping to turn things around ahead of the upcoming tournament.
- Current FIFA world ranking: No. 35 (November, 2023)
- Regional ranking: 6th (CONMEBOL)

Chile
If there is any nation absolutely desperate for a positive showing at the Copa America to stave off the creeping demons, it is Chile. Like Mexico, but arguably worse, Chile’s national team future hangs on a knife edge. Their back-to-back Copa America titles — the first in the nation’s history — in 2015 and 2016 were supposed to signal their new place amongst the South American elite, but it’s all come crashing down in calamitous fashion.
They failed to qualify for both the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, and they now sit outside a qualifying position in the 2026 standings despite expansion of the field. The latest setback, picking up a lone point from matches against Paraguay and Ecuador where they failed to score a goal, saw the coach sacked and interim Nicolas Cordova installed.
Once filled with promising talent not a decade ago, Chile are now looking at a porous squad without any prominent players outside of Inter star Alexis Sanchez. Veterans like Gary Medel, Arturo Vidal, and Charles Aranguiz have begun to phase out, but nobody has proven capable of replacing those ageing stars. They need a spark in the worst way, but they could be in for another disappointment as the slide threatens to extend longer and longer.
- Current FIFA world ranking: No. 40 (November, 2023)
- Regional ranking: 7th (CONMEBOL)
- Copa America titles (last): 2 (2016)
- Copa America appearances (last): 40 (2021)
