Euro 2024 has — for the most part — been an engrossing tournament over the past few two weeks.
The group phase came to its dramatic conclusion on Wednesday, with the final games in Group E and Group F. Fans had hoped to be treated to more entertainment than was served up on an unusually dour Tuesday when England, Slovenia, Denmark and Serbia all failed to score a goal. They were largely disappointed.
However, that should not detract from what has generally been a hugely engaging competition. Plus, supporters can now look ahead to the start of the “real” tournament: the knockout phase. From here on in, Euro 2024 enters a single-elimination format in which one bad result can send a team home. This stage will run all the way through to the final on July 14 in Berlin.
However, Thursday will come as a bit of a shock for those who have relished watching multiple matches every day since June 14: there’s not a single fixture on the schedule. What’s going on? And when does the Round of 16 start?

Why are there no Euro 2024 matches today?
Thursday, June 27, is the first day since the start of the tournament on which no Euro 2024 games are taking place. That’s because it is a designated rest day.
The tournament traditionally takes at least one day off from scheduled matches at the end of the group stage. The group phase concluded with the final four fixtures on Wednesday, June 26, with Groups E and F finishing Matchday 3. There will now be two rest days before the competition resumes with the opening game of the Round of 16.
When is Euro 2024 Round of 16?
The Round of 16, the first stage of the Euro 2024 knockout phase, begins Saturday, June 29.
The first two matches will be Switzerland vs. Italy in Berlin, and Germany vs. Denmark in Dortmund. After that, two more games will be played each day from June 30 to July 2.
