There are no two more exciting words in sports than “Game 7” — and that’s exactly what the hockey world is being treated to tonight.
The 2024 Stanley Cup Final is on the line Monday night, as just one game will decide whether it’s the Oilers or the Panthers that will hoist hockey’s most coveted trophy.
Edmonton is on the verge of history. Facing a 3-0 series deficit, Connor McDavid and Co. did what seemed unthinkable at the time — rattle off three consecutive wins to keep their title hopes alive. Rogers Place turned into a madhouse for the final time of the 2023-24 season last Friday, with a 5-1 victory in Edmonton forcing the winner-take-all Game 7, the first in the finals since 2019.

There have only been four instances in NHL history of a team coming back from down 3-0 in the playoffs, and it’s just happened once in the Stanley Cup Final. The Oilers are aiming to become No. 5, and the first squad since the 1942 Maple Leafs to do so for a championship. Not only would it put Edmonton in hockey history, but it also would mark arguably the greatest comeback in sports.
For the Panthers, they can put an end to those dreams tonight with a win and prohibit would would be a second consecutive loss in the Stanley Cup Final after losing in 2023 to the Golden Knights. The Florida organization has never won an NHL title, and it can claim its first on home ice at Amerant Bank Arena.
At this point, the first three games mean nothing. The last three games mean nothing. It’s a completely clean slate for tonight, with just 60 minutes standing in the way of one club and a championship.

Second period
9:17 p.m.: Second period is a go from Sunrise.
End of the first period: Panthers 1, Oilers 1
8:58 p.m.: After 20 minutes, it’s a 1-1 game. The first few minutes were chaotic, resulting in the goals by Verhaeghe and Janmark. However, both teams settled down, with the Oilers taking over in the middle of the first, and then Panthers sustaining more of the pressure to end the frame. Shots on goal in the period were 7-6 in favor of the Panthers.
8:54 p.m.: After a flurry of chances in the first half of the period, both sides have settled down. There’s been much more structure/defense in the latter portion of the opening frame. Shots are even at 6-6 with three minutes to go.
8:44 p.m.: It’s a game of inches. Evan Bouchard rips a shot that beats Bobrovsky, but it clangs off the iron and stays out. It’s still 1-1 with under seven minutes left in the first period.

8:42 p.m.: It’s been an incredible pace to Game 7. There’s action at both ends, with the Oilers and Panthers each getting shots onto the goaltenders. A very fast pace, which may favor Edmonton as opposed to Florida’s forechecking preference.
Panthers 1, Oilers 1
8:35 p.m.: GOAL! Just two minutes after Verhaeghe opening the scoring, it’s back to a tied game. Cody Ceci sends an incredible stretch pass to Mattias Janmark, who goes in on a breakaway and beats Sergei Bobrovsky for his second goal of the series. Edmonton has feasted on Bobrovsky on breakaways, with the latest being the fifth such goal to get by the Florida netminder. It’s 1-1 just 6:44 into the contest.

Panthers 1, Oilers 0
8:30 p.m.: GOAL! Seconds after Foegele exits the box, Carter Verhaeghe tips in a shot from Evan Rodrigues to get the Panthers on the board. Florida desperately needed something from Verhaeghe, and he delivers to open the scoring in Game 7. The Panthers are out in front just 4:27 into the contest.

8:27 p.m.: Just 2:21 in, and the Panthers are on the power play. Warren Foegele gets his stick in the face of Brandon Montour, and he’ll sit for high-sticking. Florida’s power play has not been good in this series, allowing multiple shorthanded goals.
8:24 p.m.: The puck is down, and Game 7 is a go.

7:25 p.m.: Despite Sergei Bobrovsky not skating on Sunday, he is expected to be in net for Florida.
7:07 p.m.: While the Oilers are on the cusp of sports history, the Panthers are trying to make history of their own. Florida has never hoisted the Stanley Cup before, and are one win away from doing so.
6:45 p.m.: The 3-0 comeback in the NHL came in 2012 when the Kings rallied back to take out the Sharks, but that was only in the first round. The only other finals where a team successfully won four in a row after facing elimination was in 1942 with the Maple Leafs.
6:15 p.m.: One of the changes for the Panthers is putting Kyle Okposo back in the lineup for Game 7. He shared a feel-good moment he had with his son earlier in the day.
Kyle Okposo, drawing into Game 7: “I grabbed my son today, who’s eight, and said, ‘You know what I was doing when I was your age? I was in the driveway with my Rollerblades on pretending I was in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final. How special is it you’re going to the game?'”
