Jude Bellingham brought his Real Madrid exploits to Euro 2024 as he gave England an early lead in their Group C opener against Serbia in Gelsenkirchen.
The 20-year-old midfield sensation scored 23 goals in 42 appearances during his debut season at the Santiago Bernabeu, lifting LaLiga and the UEFA Champions League in the process.
And it took Bellingham just 12 minutes to open his European Championship account when he headed home Bukayo Saka’s deflected cross amid a positive start from Gareth Southgate’s side.
The Sporting News is following England vs. Serbia live, providing score updates, commentary and highlights as they happen.

Halftime
The left-wing delivery is hopeless, Bellingham clears and his goal remains the difference at the break.
45+2 mins: Lukic gets a cross in and Stones has to scramble behind at the back post under pressure from Mitrovic.
45 mins: There will be two minutes of added time.
43 mins: Serbia forced into an early change as Kostic limps off. The Juventus man has had a tough time defensively but his deliveries from the left were set to be a key weapon. It’s a big blow. Mladenovic into the fray.
39 mins: Gudelj gets Serbia’s first yellow card for fouling Bellingham, who else? They’ve collectively worked hard for that one.
37 mins: Saka has got poor old Strahinja Pavlovic on toast. He scoots away once more but his cross is behind Foden, who probably made the wrong run.
33 mins: Zivkovic gets the chance to fire a cross towards Serbia’s imposing forwards. Guehi passes his first test of this sort with flying colours.
30 mins: A long wait with Trippier, Foden and Alexander-Arnold over the ball. The latter plonks it into the wall. Probably wasn’t worth the wait.
29 mins: Saka is causing some mayhem down the Serbia left. A bouncing ball comes back to Alexander-Arnold. Gudelj scythes through the Liverpool man and England have a free-kick in a handy position.
25 mins: Should be 2-0 to England! Alexander-Arnold and Saka combine to release Walker. The right-back bursts into the box, could have gone down and prods a shot across the face of goal.
24 mins: Fiesty bit of nonsense between Bellingham and Kostic there, with the Englishman the instigator.
23 mins: Serbia move through midfield and Vlahovic has a shot blocked by Guehi outside the box.
21 mins: Saka is up the other end to win a free-kick that puts Alexander-Arnold in more comfortable territory. It’s a lovely ball but Rice completely misreads it and it goes wide off his shoulder.
20 mins: Ohhh, what are you doing there, Trent Alexander-Arnold? England’s hybrid midfielder takes the touch of a man wearing clown shoes and Mitrovic lashes wide from just inside the box. A warning sign for Gareth Southgate’s men.
18 mins: Bellingham goes to ground and Foden picks up the pieces. He finds Alexander-Arnold to send a bouncing shot wide.
12 mins: GOOOOAAAAAALLLLLL!!!!!! Jude Bellingham!!!!
You can’t foul him there! Bellingham spreads play to Walker and gets on his bike. The right-back threads a lovely ball down the right flank for Saka. The Arsenal man’s cross is deflected but Bellingham keeps his eye on it to nod home.
10 mins: Bellingham wins his second free-kick in a couple of minutes. Serbia keen to snuff the Real Madrid man out at source. Trippier takes short to Walker, who floats the ball towards Rice only for Stones to foul Mitrovic.
6 mins: Kostic gets his first chance to whip a cross in from the left. It’s too high for Vlahovic.
5 mins: Serbia are really penned in here. Bellingham and Foden combine but the Manchester City man can’t bring the ball under his spell. Now Foden clips a speculative shot wide but Trippier was offside making the knockdown.
4 mins: Saka draws a foul from Milinkovic-Savic. Alexander-Arnold gets his first chance to aim a free-kick into the middle but it’s headed clear.
2 mins: Trippier holding the width on the left-hand side for England as Foden enjoys license to roam.
Kickoff: 1st Half
We’re underway. Vlahovic charges in to put Stones under pressure before England settle in to some early possession.
5 mins before kickoff: Here come the players. Time for lift-off. Fifty-eight years of hurt… and counting?
10 mins before kickoff: There’s no naturally left-sided player in the England defence tonight as Kieran Trippier files into the tunnel with his team-mates. Luke Shaw is building match fitness and his club boss Erik ten Hag is on pundit duties for Dutch television tonight. The Manchester United manager has said he does not expect Shaw to be ready to play until the group stages. Even though he’s named among the substitutes tonight, don’t expect to see him.
25 mins before kickoff: The main selection gamble from Serbia head coach Dragan Stiojkovic has come in goal, where Real Mallorca’s Predrag Rajkovic makes a first competitive international start for two years. Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dusan Vlahovic combine in a large-and-large front two that could be a handful for the England defence.
40 mins before kickoff: If there’s a winner tonight they will be top of the Group C standings. Slovenia, playing in their first major tournament since the 2010 FIFA World Cup, were excellent after halftime and a deflected strike from left-back Erik Janza 13 minutes from time secured a 1-1 draw.

1 hour before kickoff: Here’s the England team and it’s as expected. Alexander-Arnold joins Rice in midfield. Saka, Bellingham and Foden in behind Kane is certainly tasty. Kieran Trippier starts at left-back with this one coming too soon for Luke Shaw.

1 hr 20 mins before kickoff: Confirmed team news will be with us shortly and the big talking point for England is who will partner Declan Rice in central midfield. Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold is favourite to make the cut despite being a right-back for the entirety of his career. Alexander-Arnold’s supreme technical quality is beyond doubt and he roams into midfield to fine effect for his club. The appeal of his incredible variety of passes unlocking Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka and Phil Foden is obvious. However, whether or not the 25-year-old has the ability to dictate the tempo of a game from the base of midfield and grapple with the associated defensive duties is at best an unknown.
1 hr 40 mins before kickoff: There’s about half an hour to play in the other Group C game today in Frankfurt. Denmark lead Slovenia 1-0 but there have been chances at both ends since halftime. Christian Eriken’s fairytale goal remains the difference.

England vs. Serbia lineups, team news, starting 11
Southgate was boosted by having all 26 of his players in training on Friday. John Stones has recovered from a sickness bug and is partnered at centre-back by tournament debutant Marc Guehi.
The experiment of fielding Trent Alexander-Arnold in central midfield steps out of the preserve of international friendlies and low-risk qualifiers. At left-back, the game comes too soon for Luke Shaw as the Manchester United left-back builds match fitness, meaning a start for Kieran Trippier.
England lineup (4-2-3-1, right to left): Pickford — Walker, Stones, Guehi, Trippier — Alexander-Arnold, Rice — Saka, Bellingham, Foden — Kane.
England subs (max 15): Ramsdale (GK), Henderson (GK), Shaw, Konsa, Dunk, Gallagher, Toney, Gordon, Watkins, Bowen, Eze, Gomez, Palmer, Wharton, Mainoo.
Dusan Tadic, formerly of Ajax and Southampton has to be content with a place on the bench as Sevilla’s Nemanja Gudelj bolsters central midfield.
Joining Aleksandar Mitrovic in attack should be Dusan Vlahovic, who scored 16 times in 33 Serie A appearances for Juventus in 2023/24.
Serbia lineup: (3-5-2): Rajkovic (GK) — Milenkovic, Veljkovic, Pavlovic — Zivkovic, S. Milinkovic-Savic, Gudelj, Lukic, Kostic — Mitrovic, Vlahovic.
Serbia subs (max 15): Petrovic (GK), V. Milinkovic-Savic (GK), Stojic, Maksimovic, Jovic, Tadic, Babic, Mijailovic, Ilic, Ratkov, Samardzic, Gacinovic, Spajic, Mladenovic, Birmancevic.
