The Philadelphia 76ers truly cannot catch a break this preseason, with seemingly every game resulting in an injury.
Star guard Tyrese Maxey is the latest to suffer an injury, as he exited Friday’s game with a thumb contusion. Prior to Maxey, Joel Embiid did not play in the preseason due to knee rehab, Paul George hyperextended his knee, and Jared McCain suffered pulmonary contusions.
With the Sixers’ top goal to remain healthy already failing before the start of the regular season, it’s reasonable for the front office to seek additional help. Three potential durable trade targets are Jonas Valanciunas (Washington Wizards), Bobby Portis (Milwaukee Bucks), and Nickeil Alexander-Walker (Minnesota Timberwolves).
Valanciunas and Portis are strong options to support the frontcourt in Embiid’s absence, as both can stretch the floor at a high level. The newly acquired Wizards big man could see a change of scenery once eligible while Portis is not safe with Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo expecting a championship ring this season. Both big men appeared in 82 games last season.
A package centered around draft capital is likely enough to bring in Walker, who is a two-way wing ready to contribute to a championship contender. The Wolves traded Karl-Anthony Towns partially to save money, which could be replicated by moving the 26-year-old. He also played in all 82 games in 2024.
Philadelphia already brought in one ‘iron man’ in veteran guard Reggie Jackson, but it’s quite clear another could come in handy throughout the year.
