Corbin Burnes and Cole Ragans toe the rubber in Game 1 as the Orioles and Royals begin their best-of-three American League Wild Card series on Tuesday afternoon.
Back in February, Baltimore acquired Burnes in a blockbuster trade with a specific eye towards October: A proven ace, the right-hander has a 2.84 ERA in nine postseason appearances, the majority occurring in a relief role in 2018.
And Burnes has been as advertised this season, pitching to a 2.92 ERA in 194.1 innings, stabilizing an injury-riddled rotation. But his biggest test comes Tuesday, kicking off what the Orioles hope will be a lengthy postseason run.
On the flipside, the Royals have relied heavily on their stalwart starting rotation, led by their ace, Ragans.
Ragans, 26, flourished in his first year as a full-time starter, pitching to a 3.14 ERA with 223 strikeouts in 186.1 innings. He’ll be making his postseason debut.
