Quarterbacks who struggle are often turned on quickly, even if their team invested a high draft pick in them.
Geno Smith and Jared Goff have had similar career paths in that aspect, with both struggling to get going and needing a change of scenery to be the quarterbacks they were expected to be.
Smith was a second-round pick who was supposed to be the New York Jets’ savior. That didn’t pan out, and he bounced between the New York Giants and Los Angeles Chargers before backing up Russell Wilson in Seattle. Smith won the starting job in 2022 after Wilson was traded, and he had become a different quarterback. He won that year’s Comeback Player of the Year Award after Seattle finished with a 9-8 record.

Goff was the number one overall pick by the Rams in 2016. He led them to a Super Bowl appearance in 2019, but couldn’t re-create that success. Goff was then involved in a trade that sent him and draft picks to Detroit in exchange for Matthew Stafford. The expectation was that he would play for the Lions for one year and then be released or the backup. Goff has experienced his career resurgence and now has the city of Detroit behind him as he tries to take the Lions to the Super Bowl for the first time.
This should be a fun game. Smith currently has the fourth-most passing yards in the league — he trails both Dak Prescott and Daniel Jones, who have played an extra game. Detroit defensive lineman Aidan Hutchinson is red hot this season and has already picked up 6.5 sacks. At this rate, he would demolish not only opposing quarterbacks but the single-season NFL record of 22.5 sacks held by Michael Strahan and T.J. Watt.

Jason Myers is lining up for a 62-yard kick. It would be a new career long for him. Seattle missed it, and Detroit tried to return it but to no avail. We go to halftime.
9:32 p.m. — Detroit’s drive sputters out of the gate. There was a holding penalty on first down followed by a nine-yard gain by wide receiver Kalif Raymond. Goff was then sacked for a loss of eight yards and Detroit has lost seven yards since the drive began.

9:28 p.m. — Smith missed tight end Noah Fant on a pass, but found Charbonnet for an eight-yard gain. The QB then couldn’t connect with Metcalf and Seattle was forced to punt. Detroit will get the back back with about a minute left in the first half.
9:20 p.m. — There is trickery afoot! Smith hits JSN for a short gain, but the wide receiver throws a backwards lateral to Charbonnet on the sideline who picks up 17 more yards. The Lions ran a similar play last week, and it seems like the Seahawks did their research.

9:00 p.m. — Walker starts the next drive off with as four yard carry. Smith missed Pharoah Brown on a pass, but follows it up with a 10-yard gain to JSN. Smith couldn’t find Metcalf in the middle of the field, but then threw it left to Brown for a three-yard pick up.
Smith scrambles in the backfield and miraculously escapes pressure for a two yard gain. Defensive holding is called so Seattle gets to move down the field. Tyler Lockett finds the stat sheet with a six-yard gain.
Smith continues airing the ball out and finds Walker for a 10-yard gain. The running back flipped up on the defender, was never down, and ran to pick up extra yardage.
