The Chicago Cubs could look to spend big this winter to close the gap between them and the Milwaukee Brewers.
FanSided’s Zach Pressnell suggested three players who either played for or currently play for the Brewers the Cubs could sign to get “some revenge” on the Brewers. Among those players was former Brewers ace Corbin Burnes.
“Now Counsell and the Cubs have to look for some revenge. The best way for them to get revenge would be to go out and sign some top-tier free agents this winter,” wrote Pressnell. “Heck, why not some former Brewers who played under Counsell in an attempt to weaken Milwaukee while strengthening up the Cubs?
Burnes was traded from Milwaukee to the Baltimore Orioles last offseason but will be a free agent after the season. Burnes played under Counsell in Milwaukee. Spotrac projects Burmnes to sign a six-year, $ 182 million deal this winter.
“To say that Burnes would be a difference maker at the top of the Cubs rotation would be an understatement,” wrote Pressnell. “Not only is Burnes an ace, but he’s among the best and most dominant pitchers in the entire league.”
Burnes’ resume speaks for itself. He has been named an All-Star four consecutive seasons. He won the National League Cy Young Award in 2021. He also led the league in ERA that season. This season, he has started 31 games and has a 2.95 ERA.
