The Los Angeles Rams, oddly enough, continue to be the subject of quarterback trade buzz in mid-September.
It’s not just limited to wild Bryce Young trade ideas with the Carolina Panthers, either.
Elsewhere, there are suggestions that the Rams are the perfect landing spot for a trade candidate such as Denver Broncos passer Zach Wilson.
ESPN’s Dan Graziano floated this idea, saying that Sean McVay doesn’t have a long-term developmental player behind Matthew Stafford:
“He’s on a cheap deal, just turned 25 and he has spent the past six months learning under Denver coach Sean Payton. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 draft, Wilson is third on the Broncos’ depth chart behind Bo Nix and Jarrett Stidham, and he could hold some appeal to another team as a developmental prospect. He has 33 career starts. but his QBR since 2021 is a very low 33.9.”
Unless the Rams quickly pull off a turnaround and dig out of the 0-2 hole, the fact the front office redid Matthew Stafford’s deal to give themselves some flexibility next offseason will continue to factor into ideas like this.
Granted, this one isn’t as dramatic as suggesting McVay go find a new long-term starter right away, at least. But there’s some validity to the idea that Wilson, the former second-overall pick, has some upside that might be unlocked in a new setting now that he’s away from the New York Jets.
If there’s a positive to the idea, Wilson likely wouldn’t cost all that much to acquire via trade. And given the sudden resurgence of rehab quarterback projects around the league, it’s worth acknowledging that if McVay advocates for the move, there might be a good chance of it working out.
As always, this is getting ahead of things, with Stafford and Co. more than capable of righting the proverbial ship. But ideas like these are at least worth logging ahead of the trade deadline.
