The Seattle Seahawks didn’t want to talk to Geno Smith’s people about a new contract before the start of the 2024 NFL season. That’s business as usual for this franchise, which has historically resisted negotiating with players who have two or more years remaining on their current deals under general manager John Schneider. So, it should come as no great surprise that Smith was no exception to the rule.
However, if Smith continues to play the way he has to start the year much longer, the Seahawks may come to regret not making an exception for him. While it’s a small sample size of two games, Smith is playing better than he has at any time before in his career – and his price will go up every week at this rate. The fantasy projections might paint him as an average starter at best, but right now Smith is performing at an elite level.
First, let’s see how Smith is doing according to the traditional quarterback numbers through two weeks this season.
Geno Smith traditional 2024 stats
– Passing yards: 498 (ranks 7th)
– Passing TDs: 2 (tied for 13th)
– Completion rate: 73.9% (ranks 4th)
– Yards per attempt: 7.2 (ranks 16th)
– Passer rating: 97.4 (ranks 8th)
While these are pretty solid numbers, they don’t really tell the tale of how well Smith is playing right now. Let’s see how Smith compares to the competition in advanced stats.
Geno Smith advanced 2024 stats
– EPA: 15.2 (ranks 1st)
– QBR: 69.8 (ranks 5th)
– PAA: 7.4 (ranks 4th)
– EPA/pass: 10.3 (ranks 3rd)
– RAW: 76.2 (ranks 5th)
As you can see, Smith is in the top five for each of these, including the best EPA mark in the legue right now.
It is still early, so we can’t get too far ahead of ourselves. However, it appears that Smith is living up to our offseason hope that offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb will be able to unlock new levels of his game. This might be just the beginning.
