New York Yankees slugger Juan Soto will be a free agent for the first time in his career after this season.
His magical season in New York may be enough for the Yankees to write a blank check, but many teams, including the New York Mets, will be willing to make Soto huge offers. Jon Heyman of the New York Post thinks that if Soto were to join the National League East, the Yankees would be the ‘more likely landing spot.’
Heyman discussed the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies as potential suitors for Soto this winter. However, the Mets have not been shy about spending big in free agency.
“Almost any team would covet a 25-year-old superstar (except the Marlins and White Sox), but if he leaves the Yankees for the NL East, the Mets would seem the more likely landing spot,” wrote Heyman.
Heyman also discussed the possibility of Soto’s first team, the Washington Nationals, signing him. However, ownership has changed, making it unlikely.
“From here though, the Nats seem like a long shot since win-first owner Ted Lerner was replaced by budget-conscious son Mark Lerner,” wrote Heyman.
Soto is one of the game’s biggest stars. Spotrac projects him to sign a 14-year, $ 517 million deal this winter.
The Mets also will try to sign one of their own, Pete Alonso, who is also set for a big payday.
