Preseason polls tend to mean very little in college football, and fans of the sport got to see that firsthand during the first couple weeks of the season.
While most of the top-10 teams in the Preseason AP Top 25 had no issue handling business in Week 1, Florida State struggled immensely. FSU lost a heartbreaker overseas to Georgia Tech in Week 0 before getting surprisingly manhandled 28-13 by Boston College in the Seminoles’ home opener.
As a result, Florida State sits at 0-2 through two weeks. That will surely be enough to drop Mike Norvell’s squad from a top-10 ranking to unranked while the Seminoles’ College Football Playoff hopes are on life support — even despite the expansion of the CFP to 12.
BRACKETOLOGY: How Week 1 shakes up potential College Football Playoff field
FSU wasn’t the only big-name team to disappoint in Week 1. No. 13 LSU lost its third consecutive season opener under Brian Kelly in a 27-20 loss to 23rd-ranked USC while 14th-ranked Clemson couldn’t score a touchdown in its 34-3 loss to No. 1-ranked Georgia.
Of course, plenty of other teams earned big-time victories in critical spots to cement their status among the sport’s elite. Notably, No. 7 Notre Dame beat No. 20 Texas A&M on the road at Kyle Field while No. 4 Texas, No. 5 Alabama and No. 6 Ole Miss all shut out their opponents and won by at least 52 points.
The AP Top 25 and Coaches Polls are still far from settled. They will likely remain volatile for at least a few more weeks, especially with an important Texas vs. Michigan clash upcoming in Week 2.
But for now, here’s a look at how the AP Top 25 and Coaches Polls look entering Week 2:
