It’s been over a decade since West Virginia found itself in a top-level bowl game — a 70-33 win over Clemson in the Orange Bowl following the 2011 season.
CBS Sports projected the entire College Football Playoff and every bowl game and has the Mountaineers continuing their run of middling bowl appearances with a spot in the Armed Forces Bowl on Dec. 27 against Texas-San Antonio in Fort Worth, Texas.
The CBS projections put 10 of 16 teams from the Big 12 Conference in the postseason, including two CFP teams —No. 18 Kansas State and No. 12 Utah.
West Virginia snapped a streak of back-to-back losing seasons by going 9-4 in 2023. The Mountaineers capped the year with a 30-10 win over North Carolina in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.
West Virginia plays one of the highest-profile season openers in school history when they host No. 8 Penn State on Aug. 31.
Remember when West Virginia outscored Clemson 35-3 in the second quarter of the 2012 Orange Bowl?
