Swing high and stick the landing. That’s the goal for Suni Lee and seven other gymnasts in the 2024 Olympic uneven bar finals.
The 2021 Olympic bronze medalist on bars will go for her second straight medal on the event and her third podium finish of the Paris Games. It won’t come easy, as event qualifiers make it one of the most challenging competitions in gymnastics.
Nina Derwael of Belgium will defend her title after qualifying for the event in fifth. However, it’s not hers to lose. Algeria’s Kaylia Nemour is the favorite for gold with one of the most difficult routines not just on bars but in gymnastics. She scored a 15.600, 7.1 points from difficulty, in qualifiers to earn the top spot in the final.
China’s Qiu Qiyuan is right behind her, though, scoring 15.066 in qualifications. One mistake from Nemour and Qiyuan could grab the gold. Either way, the World champion will likely end up on the podium.
But who will get the gold medal? Lee, Derwael or a standout performance from someone like Great Britain’s Rebecca Downie?
It all comes down to Sunday in one of the most intriguing event finals of Paris.
