Romania face the Netherlands in the penultimate match of Euro 2024’s Round of 16 stage on Tuesday.
Ronald Koeman’s side, like their opponents in Munich, finished with four points in the group stage. That tally was enough to send Romania through as winners of Group E ahead of Belgium, while the Oranje only progressed as one of the best third-place teams.
The pressure is certainly greater on Dutch shoulders. They have failed to find consistent good form at these finals, yet they will be considered the favourites here against a team who have only once before reached the knockout phase of this competition. Could another shock be on the cards?

Romania vs. Netherlands live updates, highlights from Euro 2024
HALFTIME: Romania look better across three minutes of stoppage time, but in the end, the halftime whistle blows with the Dutch 1-0 in front.
Romania started extremely well, but Cody Gakpo scored against the run of play, and that woke the Dutch up, leading Ronald Koeman’s side to dominate the rest of the opening half. Romania will be buoyed by how they started and finished the half, but everything in between resulted in heavy pressure.
This feels more like a multi-goal Dutch win than a Romania comeback, based on the current momentum.
44th min: Chance, Netherlands! Oh dear, how has Xavi Simons flubbed that??? He receives a wonderful cutback right on the penalty area and finds himself in acres of space without a defender in the same zip code. Yet somehow, he cannot get the ball unglued from feet, and by the time he eventually sorts out a shot, he’s smothered by defenders and produces an awkward, off-balance effort that slides well wide. What a missed opportunity!
HIGHLIGHT: Watch in USA | Canada
38th min: Memphis Depay cooks a Romania defender on the right flank but his lateral entry ball to the middle is cleared away. Romania are defending quite deep now, as their early spell of pressure is all but evaporated. The Dutch are beginning to take real control of this match.
Vasile Mogos cannot continue, as Bogdan Racovitan enters in his place. Mogos is sitting on the bench with an ice pack on his head, and may be entered into concussion protocol.
33rd min: Vasile Mogos is screaming for medical attention as he slams hard into Denzel Dumfries to meet a bouncing ball. His chest smashed right into the shoulder of Dumfries, and it’s likely that he had the wind knocked out of him — hopefully it’s nothing more than that from a truly thumping collision.
31st min: What a tackle from Spurs defender Radu Dragusin! He slides desperately to stop a cross from Denzel Dumfries, sliding in right in front of a waiting Memphis Depay to put the ball out for a corner!
26th min: Chance, Netherlands! Stefan de Vrij comes so close to doubling the Dutch lead but he puts his header just wide at the far post! He meets a corner with space to get the right contact, but puts it into the outside of the side-netting. The Dutch supporters behind the goal thought for a moment it had gone in, but in the end it fails to test the Romanian goalkeeper.
24th min: Romania have not been dismayed by the early Dutch goal, and are continuing to press high and pressure the Netherlands back line. Dennis Man scuffs a shot from the penalty spot which skitters wide amidst poor first-time contact.
20th min: GOAL! NETHERLANDS! Just as the Dutch began to finally get their legs under them, they find themselves in front thanks to a lovely strike from Cody Gakpo!
It’s such a simple individual move, as the Liverpool man cuts inside, shredding Andrei Ratiu to create space for a vicious right-footed blast. He buries it inside Florin Nita’s near post!
HIGHLIGHT: Watch in USA | Watch in UK | Canada | Australia
14th min: Chance, Romania! The Netherlands get away with another near disaster! Denis Dragus is threaded through brilliantly right through the middle, but when he attempts to cut back with his first touch, the ball gets stuck at his feet and Virgil van Dijk can clear!
Then, moments later, it’s recycled and a venomous shot by Dennis Man is ripped from distance and doesn’t come too far from hitting the target! Every Romanian player is getting involved and are overwhelming the Dutch in all areas of the pitch!
11th min: The Dutch look extremely uncomfortable under this Romania press, and are nearly caught in possession in their own penalty area. This is quite something in the early stages, certainly not what we expected. Ronald Koeman is livid with his side on the touchline.
8th min: Romania are doing extremely well to press the Dutch high and win turnovers in dangerous positions. They have a vociferous support in Munich and have started well. The Netherlands have yet to really build forward.
2nd min: Romania force the Dutch to do some defending as a pinpoint cross by Razvan Marin is nearly on a platter for Ianis Hagi at the top of the six-yard box, but Denzel Dumfries does well to head it clear. Hagi comes away from the aerial duel with a cut on his head that’s bleeding, and needs some medical treatment. He may end up with the ol’ head wrap.
Kickoff: They’re under way in Munich! Following Georgia’s elimination, at 47 in the world, Romania are the last team in the Euro 2024 field ranked outside the top 25 in the world. Can they spring an upset against the seventh-ranked Dutch?
Romania vs. Netherlands: Pre-match commentary, analysis, more

30 mins before kickoff: Koeman places his trust in Xavi Simons. At 21 years and 72 days old, he becomes the third youngest player to start a knockout stage game at the European Championship for the Netherlands after Patrick Kluivert and Arjen Robben.
1 hour before kickoff: Team news is in! Here’s how the two sides lineup for this Round of 16 2024 European Championship clash.
Romania starting lineup (4-1-4-1): Nita (GK) — Ratiu, Dragusin, Burca, Mogos — M. Marin — Hagi, R. Marin, Stanciu, Man — Dragus.
Netherlands starting lineup (4-2-3-1, right to left): Verbruggen (GK) — Dumfries, De Vrij, Van Dijk, Ake — Schouten, Reijnders — Simons, Bergwijn, Gakpo — Memphis.
1 hour 30 mins before kickoff: Romania have reached the knockout stage of a major tournament for the first time since Euro 2000, when they were knocked out by Italy at the quarterfinal stage.
Romania have, however, won just one of their 14 matches against the Netherlands in all competitions, losing their last four in a row.
2 hours before kickoff: The Netherlands didn’t impress consistently in the group phase, and Romania came through a potentially very tricky pool of their own with more ease than was expected. This one is perhaps not the cut-and-dried result that many might suspect.
