Twelve years ago, the Dominican Republic had a good chance at qualifying for the Olympics in London, but it fell short in a second-chance game to Nigeria. Now, the country has yet another chance to get to the big stage via the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
Make no mistake — it won’t be an easy run for Nestor “Che” Garcia’s squad. Celtics big man Al Horford dropped out after logging a ton of minutes during a lengthy NBA championship run, and Karl-Anthony Towns was removed from the roster after reaching the Western Conference Finals with the Timberwolves.
Still, this DR team has plenty of scoring punch, with the Kings’ Chris Duarte leading the charge along with the backcourt duo of Andres Feliz and Jean Montero. It’s safe to say no team will be taking the Dominican Republic lightly this July. But does this team have enough of a defense to finally qualify for the Olympics?
Here’s a complete guide to the Dominican Republic’s schedule for the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament, including dates, times and streaming options for all of the matchups.

When are the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments?
- Dates: Tuesday, July 2-Sunday, July 7
Each country participating in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments (OQTs) will tip off with group play during the week. Then, the two top teams in each group will face off in the semifinals. The teams that advance past the semis will face each other in the final round, with the winner punching its ticket to the Paris Olympics.
Eight men’s hoops teams have already qualified for the Olympics. The four OQTs serve as a “last chance” for other teams to qualify. The four winning teams of the OQTs — in Greece, Latvia, Puerto Rico and Spain — will join the eight teams already set to compete in Paris.
