Texas has a chance to make history in Oklahoma City, and the Longhorns can do it in about the most satisfying fashion possible.
A rematch with Big 12 (soon-to-be SEC) rival Oklahoma in the Women’s College World Series Final not only gives Texas a chance to end the Sooners’ bid for a four-peat, but it could also allow the Longhorns to avenge their 2022 championship loss to Oklahoma.
While it wouldn’t be wise for Texas to underestimate Oklahoma, there’s no doubt the Sooners look a bit more vulnerable than they did a year ago. They barely survived a scare from Florida in the semifinals, dropping Monday’s Game 1 and narrowly escaping in Game 2 on Tuesday to extend their season.
The unquestioned dominant force in the sport since their three-peat began in 2021, Oklahoma had the No. 1 seed whisked away by Texas and could see its excellent run of championships ended by the Longhorns, as well.
Here’s a look at Texas’ championship history, which could receive an overhaul this week.

Texas softball championship history
Has Texas ever won a national championship in softball?
Texas has never won a championship in softball, so the Longhorns have a chance to make some history in Oklahoma City.
Outside of 2022 and 2024, Texas has five other Women’s College World Series appearances. The Longhorns first reached the WCWS in 1998 and returned in 2003, 2005, 2006, and 2013. Only once did Texas even reach the Final, so a championship in Oklahoma City would undeniably be the pinnacle for the program.
Texas has made five consecutive super regionals dating back to 2019 (2020 was canceled due to COVID-19). The Longhorns are on the rise, but falling short of that elusive first title this year would be an extremely disappointing finish to an exciting season.
When was Texas’ last WCWS Final appearance?
Texas’ most recent and only appearance in the Women’s College World Series Final before this year came in 2022 when the Longhorns fell to Oklahoma.
Texas advanced to the Final in 2022 with College World Series wins over UCLA, Arizona, and Oklahoma State, but Oklahoma was a persistent thorn in the side of the program. The Longhorns took a 7-2 loss to the Sooners in the double-elimination portion of the bracket, and the Final began with a 16-1 Oklahoma win over Texas. Overall, Texas was outscored 31-8 across three games during the 2022 Women’s College World Series.
Is Oklahoma more vulnerable this time around? Recent results say that’s the case, but the Sooners have the championship experience that Texas will have to overcome as the Longhorns search for their first-ever national title.

Now, it comes down to an eighth title — and fourth consecutive — for Oklahoma or the first-ever title for Texas.
