New York Yankees starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt was placed on the 15-day injured list due to a lat strain, the team announced Thursday. The move is retroactive to Monday, May 27.
This is the first blow to what has otherwise been a stellar start to the season for the starting rotation, excluding the injury to ace Gerrit Cole.
Schmidt has been a major part of that development as the fourth starter in the rotation. The entire rotation has been the best in MLB for the better part of the first two months of the season.
In 11 starts, Schmidt is 5-3 with a 2.52 ERA in 60.2 innings pitched. He has two quality starts and has 67 strikeouts and 20 walks.
In a corresponding move, the Yankees recalled right-handed pitcher Cody Morris from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
