Recently, the BBC World Service’s investigative team, BBC Eye, released a powerful documentary titled Burning Sun, unveiling the many unknown aspects of the infamous Burning Sun Scandal that left the Korean entertainment industry shaken in 2019.
The documentary revived a lot of public outrage against the celebrities who were involved in the sex crimes related to the scandal, marking how almost all of them were able to return to society after serving minimal sentences for their heinous crimes. Seungri, who was a significant face of the crime scandal, has also received increased criticism after the documentary.
In this context, many netizens rediscovered a past interaction between Seungri and Kim Sejeong, which left them even more disgusted and disturbed by the former idol’s treatment of women, even on screen.
In 2018, Seungri guest starred on a variety show called Salty Tours, and Sejeong, back then a member of Gugudan and still a rookie idol, was a cast member on the show. During the episode, Seungri suddenly suggested that Sejeong pour beer to the most attractive male cast member, making the junior idol visibly uncomfortable.
The act was also seen as disrespectful, as in traditional Korean culture, men would often get women to pour drinks for them at brothels or hostess bars. It also often implies that the one pouring is inferior to the one receiving the drink.
With the clip resurfacing, netizens couldn’t hold back their distaste for Seungri’s behavior toward Sejeong. But they also rebuked the rest of the male cast members who went along with this weird joke, which included Jung Joon Young, another perpetrator of the Burning Sun Scandal.
- “Those crazy b*stards really p*ss me off.”
- “No one intervened or edited that part out. Good thing Sejeong knew how to react the smart way.”
- “I hope Kim Sejeong becomes even more successful.”
- “Ew, those f*ckers.”
- “Crazy pieces of trash.”
- “Even Jung Joon Young was there. Eugh.”
- “The person asking her to pour, the people holding up their glasses, and the people who filmed and aired this are all stooping at the same low level. Tsk tsk.”
- “There’s no point in calling them out at this point…Even Park Na Rae was there, but seeing how she didn’t stop him, I feel like everybody saw it as just entertainment back then. Now we know better about him and Jung Joon Young. But back then, no one knew, so it would’ve been even more difficult to call them out on stuff like this on set.”
- “Wow… So vulgar… I hope Sejeong succeeds even more.”
- “These losers f*cking around…”
- “When my friend, who used to be a Seungri fan, watched this episode, they immediately guessed that Seungri lives at those escort bars [based on how he was acting].”
