A 36-year old man was revealed to have shot his girlfriend.
Last December 2023, Theerasak “Pe” Phuanphong shot his girlfriend, Nano, 15, and her friend, Tok Taek, 14, in the Ban Dung district of Thailand’s Udon Thani province as they were trying to escape him.
Nano and Pe met through a mutual friend and were dating for a month before the shooting. He had even asked her parents for her hand in marriage, offering a 10,000 THB (around $ 270 USD) dowry and gold ring weighing one salung (3.81 grams).
She regretted accepting his hand in marriage after she found out about his frequent drug usage. She began putting a distance between the two of them which led to the confrontation at their rented house four days before the shoot-out.
Pe locked Nano and her friend Tok Taek overnight. Nano was able to call another friend for help and managed to escape. She then spent three days at Tok Taek’s house where she was bombarded by calls from her boyfriend.
Finally, on December 17, Nano asked Tok Taek to take her home. Only 15 minutes into their journey via motorcycle, Pe came by with a .38 calibre handgun, hitting the friend on the left thigh. Tok Taek escaped serious injury and was soon taken to the hospital.
In an interview with the police following the kidnapping, Nano described her relationship with Pe as a volatile one. The latter was prone to fits of jealousy and anger, frequently beating her up out of fear that she was seeing other men.
She was able to persuade him to surrender. He justified his actions to the police by saying that everything he did was straight from his heart.
I just did it out of concern and love.
— Pe
He was charged with with attempting to kill and firearms offences.
