Now that Bryce Harper is primarily playing first base, he has a career-high 37 assists so far in the 2024 season.
The Phillies star picked up an assist off the field Monday. Harper went viral on social media for helping a local New Jersey kid ask a girl to prom.
Jake Portello, a senior at Haddonfield (N.J.) Memorial High School, explained to FOX29 how the situation came to be. The Sporting News breaks it down below.

Bryce Harper prom proposal, explained
All Portello had to do was knock on Harper’s door and ask for his help, the high schooler told FOX29.
Harper, 31, originally wanted to exchange information and plan out the prom proposal. But then the Phillies slugger decided it would be best to help off the cuff.
“Why don’t we do this right now?” Harper said, per Portello’s account.
The video of the promposal went viral on social media. The verdict? Portello’s date said yes, of course. How could you say no with a future Hall of Famer standing on your doorstep?

Hilariously enough, the girl actually hugs Harper before hugging her future prom date. Her father also came out to shake the Philadelphia superstar’s hand.
Bryce Harper family
Perhaps Harper was more inclined to assist in this situation because he married his own high school sweetheart, Kayla. Harper and his wife have been married since 2016 and have three children together.
