It’s good to be New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe right now.
The second-year infielder is enjoying a terrific start to the 2024 MLB season. Entering Tuesday, his .417 batting average leads MLB. His WAR from Baseball Reference (1.2) and Fangraphs (1.0) also leads all American League players.
His current slash line of .417/.488/.667 is stupendous. He’s one of three Yankees players age 22 or younger with 15 hits, five walks and five extra-base hits in his first 10 games of the season. The other two were Derek Jeter (1997) and Lou Gherig (1926), via Katie Sharp.

Despite putting up a 20-20 season during his rookie campaign, Volpe was a bit disappointing simply due to his high whiff and strikeout rate.
However, he looks like a completely different player in the box now. The adjustments he made to both his swing and approach at the plate have resulted in a fantastic start to his second season.
On top of all that, he’s still providing Gold Glove level defense at one of the game’s most premium positions.

Even though we’re just 11 games into the season, MLB fans are captivated by Volpe’s start.

As Giancarlo Stanton said last night, what hasn’t Anthony Volpe done so far this season?
Volpe is now hitting an MLB-best .441 with a .513 OBP, 1.219 OPS and 259 wRC+ in 10 games to begin the year. He’s been unstoppable. pic.twitter.com/eclowDbL4f
