Tonight, it’s East Coast versus West Coast. Paige Bueckers versus JuJu Watkins. UConn versus USC. Only one moves on to the Final Four.
The Huskies face the Trojans for the final spot in Cleveland, and it’s set to be one of the most exciting matchups all year with two of the best going head to head.
Of course, it’ll be a little less daunting for UConn. The Huskies made it all the way to the championship game two years ago, Bueckers’ sophomore season. They’re hoping to return once more for Aaliyah Edwards’ final season. With only eight available players, it seems like a difficult feat. But they’ve made it this far.
USC is a little less experienced when it comes to tournament play. It last played in the Elite Eight in 1994 and advanced to the Final Four in 1986, where it lost in the title game. This isn’t just any group of Trojans, though. In her third season, Lindsay Gottlieb built a group unlike anything the program’s seen before. They won the Pac-12 tournament and earned a one seed after being picked to finish sixth in the conference.
In the Elite Eight, Watkins will put the finishing touches on USC’s season, win or loss, when she ties the NCAA Division I freshman scoring record with her seventh point.
Buckle up for the Portland regional finale.
