Starship Entertainment recently aired the first episode of Debut’s Plan, their survival reality show to launch their upcoming boy group. Amongst the judges are WJSN‘s Yeonjung, and famous K-Pop choreographers Choi Young Joon and WE DEM BOYZ‘s Inkyu.
Choi Young Joon is considered a legend in the industry, having choreographed for Produce 101, SEVENTEEN, Monsta X, and more. Having been around for a long time, he commented on what he thought was the flaw in K-Pop right now.
According to him, the trainees and idols these days are all perfectly skilled and whipped into shape. However, they fail to have a connection with the audience and are missing that one thing.
Inkyu: “The kids definitely have nothing for us to nitpick at, but they’re just not touching my heart.”
Choi Young Joon: “That’s actually a flaw in the current industry. They lack something. It’s a flaw because it’s all so boring, especially because there’s quality equalization now.”
With K-Pop becoming more popular globally and the system becoming more refined, the average skillset of trainees have definitely gone up. But with this comes the price of idols teetering on being factory cutouts without the star factor everyone is searching for.
